Powys farm house transformation
A traditional rural farmhouse in Powys has been completely transformed, upgraded from an EPC G rating to a B rating through a fully funded whole-house retrofit delivered by The Power of Green.
By accessing the UK Government’s ECO4 scheme, we were able to design and deliver a complete energy upgrade, turning what was once a cold and inefficient property into a warm, comfortable home powered by renewable energy.
The farmhouse originally suffered from significant heat loss, outdated heating and extremely poor energy performance. Our approach focused on a carefully planned whole-house retrofit that would improve efficiency while preserving the character of the period property.
What We Installed:
The project followed a whole-house retrofit approach, ensuring every upgrade worked together to improve efficiency, comfort and long-term performance.
The installation included:
- Breathable internal wall insulation designed specifically for an older rural property
- A full attic rooms insulation retrofit to significantly reduce heat loss
- Careful detailing to manage moisture and protect the building fabric
- A Samsung 16kW air source heat pump to provide renewable heating and hot water
- New pipework and a radiator layout designed for low-flow temperatures
- A fully integrated hot water system with smart heating controls
- A 4kW solar PV array installed on the south-facing roof to generate clean electricity
Together, these measures transformed the thermal performance of the farmhouse, allowing the renewable heating system to operate efficiently while reducing the property’s reliance on grid electricity and lowering long-term energy costs.
The results:
The transformation of the property has been significant.
- EPC rating improved from G to B
- Dramatically reduced heat loss
- Renewable-powered heating and hot water
- Lower ongoing energy bills
- Improved comfort throughout the home
- A future-proofed rural property
- A significantly reduced carbon footprint
Through careful retrofit design and the successful use of ECO4 funding, The Power of Green delivered a complete energy transformation for this rural farmhouse at no upfront cost to the client.
The project demonstrates how a well-planned whole-house retrofit can dramatically improve comfort, efficiency and sustainability, even in older period properties.
